Hi Everyone-
Remember, you can do both, MLA or APA citation format. On the right hand side of this blog there are links to the Purdue OWL sites for help on citations.

Finishing up 448
Hi Everyone -
Here are thoughts about the final post and your final projects. Hopefully they will give you guidance and help you finish your work. Remember, everything is due by exam time at 7:45 a.m. This means all your blogs should be up, your blog post sheets (all 3 of them) should be turned into me during class.
Final Blog Ideas-these are things you could focus upon but you can choose to do what you want - you are an individual who has learned different things than others have!
Ideas: what you expected from the class and what you learned; reflections on one week or two in particular that highly impacted you; questions you are leaving the course with; issues of diversity that you feel you understand much better and will pursue in classrooms; areas you feel you still need to read about and discuss with others; and many more ideas...and feel free to cover more than one of these ideas in your final post.
Final Project - remember to post the following: your review of a professional resource, 3-5 critical reviews, and discussion of your set. Feel free to include photos, quotes, but don't forget citations.
I can't wait to see all you have learned through these two final assignments. It has been great learning about diverse issues with all of you!

After Week 8 - The movie "Blindness" and the controversy - take a stand
The new movie Blindness has created some controversy. After session 8 - please read the articles posted and then on YOUR OWN BLOG take a stand on this issue. Mention if you have seen the movie and your thoughts after watching the movie and reading different sides of the argument. If you have not seen it - look at both sides of the issue and take a stand without having seen the movie.

Looking Ahead to Week 7 - Award Groups
Session 7: Awards assignment
The co-themes of session 7 will be "practicing close readings of text" and analyzing awards for diverse literature. You'll only need to prepare for the second!Everyone:
- Read the Aronson and Pinkney articles. What are the arguments for and against honoring books in specific cultural/social categories? What assumptions does each position rely on?
- Where do you stand in terms of the debate?
- Is there an official website for the award? Are there other resources that provide information about the award? (Sometimes libraries or author blogs feature information not available on the official sites.)
- Why and when was this award created? What is the rationale for the award?
- Selection criteria: What books, authors, illustrators are eligible? How are the books judged?
- Who sponsors the award?
- Selection committee: Who chooses the winners? How do you get on the committee? How transparent is the process?
- Bring in books that have won or have been honored by the award. This will mean a trip to the library--you can coordinate this within your group. How easy was it to find the books? Do they have seals or other indications that they are award winners?
- It would be helpful if one person in the group could bring in a computer.

Post on your blog...Insider/Outsider Debate
TE 448ers - please post on your blog (by 6 p.m. Monday) your initial thoughts about the debate over who should be writing diverse children's literature - insiders (those who may belong to certain groups) or outsiders? Think deeply about what you believe and post those thoughts. Don't forget to write this in your blogging schedule at the back of the syllabus. I look forward to reading these before class! CK
